I will definitely be keeping in with that crowd. and every easter they go away for 3 nights?, dorm accom, and have a great time shooting, from what i've heard. I have pencilled myself in for next year!
And just a bit of info for all, qcg are hosting the audio visual comp on sat 7th oct,

Yes, I was curious about camera clubs. I'll have to mosey on over to one of them and check them out. I'm looking at Peninsula or Aspley as they're probably the closest. I like the idea of this 3 night getaway so I might make Peninsula my first port of call (when I get around to it that is).

Appreciate the info, Owen. The kind folk here provided me with a lot of those links to clubs a little while ago. I find most of the websites to be a bit vague though. I'll just have to show up and observe the happenings of these photog gatherings.

Tina, you're attending two clubs? Won't that create some sort of conflict of interest when it comes to inter-club comps? :) They might outcast you as a spy :D

Yeah! I was there about two months ago. The visitor centre has a nice big lake full of bird life waiting to be photographed. Around sunset seems to be the best light for photos; I didn't find dawn all that good.

Here's one from my latest visit...

Take some bird food and your radio remote so you can set the camera up near the food. You'll need a long lens and tripod as well because large flocks of pelicans congregate on a central island or the inaccessible parts of the bank. On the week-ends, the visitors are a pain in the arse though, especially the little kids scaring the birds away :-(

When you're trying to find the place, watch out for trucks! They really fly like the birds too. Also, go for a drive around Fisherman's Island; there are other photo opportunities to be had as well at the various loading facilities...watch for security guards.

Fort Lytton is nearby and open on week-ends I think too, but I haven't been there (yet!).

While I'm here, I was thinking about floating a couple of ideas for future POTN outings.

First one was a day trip to St Helena Island. For those not familiar with the place, here's the link http://www.sthelenaisland.com.au/ (external link) Anyone interested? Probably best not to leave this one until it gets too hot.

The other idea is a bit more ambitious and I'm still finding out stuff, but watch this space!

I've often thought about St Helena.. so I'm in... probably with family in tow.

One other thing that is very seasonal that I've wanted to do for a while is a whale watching tour, but this was going to be a family trip. I think I may have been discussing this on the last POTN day with someone.

i've done helena island by night, was a great tour, so i would like to see it by day as well. Count me in. Talk about it on wed.

darn, i got sprung!! No, there won't be a conflict of interest, i will only enter under ipswich in any inter-club comp. Unless of course, ipswich again pick my crapiest photo, i might enter under peninsula!

Ahh, nice one! I was hoping there might be another one coming up sometime soon (I haven't been to a meeting in many moons). I've been to (I think) 3 of these now, and they've all been great fun.

I can see a plan coming together ...

  • Saturday 21st Oct - Lone Pine followed by a night shoot somewhere, followed by losing some money at the casino.
  • Sunday 22nd Oct - BCG Portrait workshop

My camera won't know what's hit it!
