How can i view how many actuations have taken place on my 30D? Its probably obvious but I cannot see the info anywhere.
The reason I ask is I have just recieved a new 30D but the first DCIM file opened (625) started at IMG 2500. Is this normal?

Was it a brand new CF card, a used card formatted with your computer, or a used card NOT formatted with your computer before inserting into the camera?

It was a used CF card formatted in the camera before use but not formated in the computer. Would this account for it?

Yes. The camera will start at the last image number on the old card.

Easy to confirm too.
Put any jpg on the card (in the appropriate directory) , rename it as _mg_20000.jpg (or whatever you chose) , next pic you take will be 2001.

Handy to know this if you ever mix cards up , want to use somebody elses card etc , but want to keep your pic numbering in order ;)

Now if you want to reset the file numbering since you have a new camera and want to count shots, change the file numbering to "auto reset" in the menu. Insert a computer-formatted CF card and take a shot. It should be IMG_0001 in folder 100. Now change the file numbering back to "continuous". Format all your cards with the computer before inserting them (even inserting a used card without turning on the power will screw things up), and all will be good from now on, as long as you don't swap cards between cameras.

You might be surprised to see that it won't do that. You can't make the numbers smaller than what it already is although you can make it bigger. :)

. . . and the directory name has to be right, too. If you don't rename the directory to stay in step with the file number.

Correct. I am surprised.

So if you want to decrease the number , I assume you could reset the numbering in the body , then put in a card with a pic file number 1 less than the value you want?

Right - but don't forget you need to adjust the folder number correctly, too.

With the 5d and the 30D, the folder number can be whatever you wish it to be so there's really no need to adjust that like it was with the earlier models unless you'd rather it be a particular folder number.

IIRC, the 30D like the 5D allows you to create and select the next folder you'll use. Create a 100CANON or 100EOS30D folder and select that one.
