kenko tubes DO NOT work with EF-S, they do not have the extra depth, the glass would collide

I vote Canon 100mm Macro 2.8, simply because, it would double as a very nice protrait lens

What glass? Were talking about extention tubes, not tele converters

Oh, crap, well, the tubes didnt have the depth for the extra piece to slide into anyway, my kenko tubes wouldnt allow my kit lens to connect...

I took the above examples and I am quite please with the results without a lightbox. It is the focal length and type of lens I really need the advice on.

When it comes to a lens like a 100mm 2.8 what are some good lenses. I know I could look around but I like to hear what owners and users of the lenses think. Again, my main concern is how the AF works and sharpness of the image. So I am sure I will have to find a happy compromise between a great lens and a good lens since I don't have very deep pockets.

My personal recommendation....EF-S 60 macro as well.

Sharp? It'll slap many an L around in terms of sharpness. (my L's all worry about the 60 that they share the bag with!). And it's 1:1 magnification, so you will get the object projected onto your sensor at life size. Considering that the sensor is the size of a thumb (top joint upwards, including the joint, or not if you have big thumbs), that's a pretty HUGE image. In other words, you could fill the frame with an object the size of a thumb.

That looks like a really nice lens and it is available for under $400. I'll have to keep that one in mind once I get the new camera.

Thanks.

Canon's tubes will work with EFs lenses. They're a bit pricier than the Kenkos but if you get the versions marked type II they have both the red and white dots and are ready to go.

You are right Hermeto. I did not see it. Sometimes I am replying to a post or continuing the thread while someone else is contributing but I don't see it until after I have submitted and the page is refreshed.

You’ve learned a couple of things from this thread (I know I did) and that’s what is important..

I would not buy a zoom lens as a MACRO. Canon 100mm MACRO is nice. Tokin 90mm is nice as well. Tamron and Sigma MACROS do well also.

There have been a few very high quailiy zoom lenses that were specifically designed for macro work.

The Vivitar Series 1 90-180 F/4.5 comes to mind. It is very likely there were a few more.

This particular lens was very popular for macro work for medical professionals such as dentists or cosmetic surgeons.

Enjoy! Lon

Well, I just made a similar jump, from a G3 to an XTi. It's great to have an SLR again after several years of digital point and shoots. BUT... I really enjoy the little things, so I'm going to have to cough up the money for a real macro lens which will cost more than the entire G3 camera did. lol. Almost definitely the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro, based on web wisdom. Maybe in a few months.

The kit lens is pretty decent, and depending on how much magnification you really want, you might be perfectly happy with it. Here's a sample I shot when I was trying out the camera for myself - 1:8 reduced full frame on the left, full res crop on the right. There's some motion blur, so don't take this as a test of the lens' sharpness. The nice thing about the SLR is I shot about six nicely focused frames of this bee as it moved across the flowers in a ~10 second period. Snap snap snap. So much faster.

Kenko tubes work with my Sigma 30mm 1.4 EX HSM DC.

Canon tubes work with the kit lens.

I would venture to say that the majority of zoom lenses that have MACRO in their name are not true MACRO lenses. They just have closer focusing distances, but not that close. I am sure there are always exceptions.
