Ok guys, we've had Edinburgh as #1, Leuchars as an unofficial #2a, and Glencoe as the real #2 - so how about some suggestions for #3? ;)

(EDITED on 17th October): This meet is in Perthshire on Sunday 22nd October. If interested fast forward to my post #148 for latest update

How about shooting autumn forests in Perthshire?

See http://www.perthshirebigtreecountry.co.uk/index.asp?tm=30 (external link)
or http://www.prnewswire.co.uk/cgi/news/release?id=130407 (external link)
or http://www.visitdunkeld.com/Autumn%202003/index.htm (external link)

Just a few links I found on Google. I could scout out a few locations as I am local. It would have to be in the second half of October or first week in November to get the autumn colours.

Just a thought. We would be at the mercy of the weather (again) so I would understand if another city shoot got more support.

Autumn colouration is a great idea for a subject. Here's a link to the Forestry Commission - Autumn Colours (external link) page.

That's a very useful site, John.

Click on Faskally under Scotland - that would definitely be on my list of places to shoot in autumn as there is Faskally Loch for reflections - we would just need Dimitri's magic wand!

Unfortunately, I couldn't make the Glencoe meet last weekend (looks like I didn't miss much on the weather front ;) )but, Pitlochry and Autumn colour sounds good. There's also the falls at Killicrankie, just up the road, some great gorge/water and tree views. :) or the water falls/forest at Bruar (if the paths are open again). Lots of lovely cake at Bruar.......yummmmmmm!!

Start or end of October would be best for me as my brother will be home from the Falklands for 10 days around the middle of October, but can probably squeeze a day in most weekends, especially if it is up that direction.

Another landscape meet would suit me fine.
I think most of the regulars have a leaning to landscaping anyway.

Don't mind where but somewhere like the Tossachs or Loch Lomond which is not too far for most people to travel.

I'm also currently checking out Inverarey which also has a lot of indoor attractions which would be a good contingency plan for the bad weather we always seem to be cursed with on these meets.

Wherever...count me in.

Funny Steve, but i was about to suggest exactly the same thing. The shores around Loch Lomond get some really nice colour to them in the autumn (assuming they dont cut ALL the trees down) and should be a nice spot.

And its alos close for alot of people to, which is a general positive.

Count me in for number 3. I dont care about the PhD. It can bloody well wait this time around!!

I would reckon if we are trying to catch autumn colours, then the meet would have to be within the next 4-6 weeks. If we were to choose somewhere that is mentioned in the Forestry Commission website, then we could monitor the colour changes and potentially make a final decision on a date at that point. Shifts etc aside, would e.g. a week's notice be too short for people?

Scottie, do you know what your shifts would be like over the next several weeks? Are there any definite no-nos when you can't manage?

I don't mind where we meet, and Loch Lomond sounds fine if we can get some nice autumn colours too. Is there a good bit that you would recommend where we could park and spend most of the day at, or would we be driving to several locations during the day?

I like Mike's idea about Faskally with the added Loch background and the up to date colour info from the Forestry Commission.

Steve, what indoor activities at Inverary were you meaning?

Agreed. Let's get the date fixed as that usually focuses minds. We can decide on exact location later.
EDIT: (John's post crossed mine): It's tempting to leave the date flexible to get the best colours as you say John, but some people need firm plans because of other commitments. It might not work.

To get autumn colours (which would equally apply for Loch Lomond / the Trossachs as it would for Pitlochry / Dunkeld) we need to think late October or early November. That narrows it down to these dates:
Sat 21st Oct
Sun 22nd Oct
Sat 28th Oct
Sun 29th Oct
Sat 4th Nov
Sum 5th Nov

Miraculously I am free of on-call on all of these. Post your availabilities here and hopefully a date will emerge.

My wife has just reminded me about this http://www.enchantedforest.org.uk/ (external link)

This year it runs in Faskally wood from Oct 20th - Nov 5th in the evenings.

This could be either :

1. A great photo opportunity if you can stay into the evening (but you would have to pay £9 and book in advance - it gets fully booked at weekends). I went 2 years ago when it was in Dunkeld and it was magnificent. Not as garish as some of the photos suggest - see http://www.perthshire.co.uk/index.asp?lm=198 (external link)

2. A bit of a problem as some of the generators and lighting rigs may be shot-spoilers during the day! Some areas may even be restricted. We could probably avoid them just by walking further away - I could make enquiries.

Any thoughts?

That looks like a fantastic opportunity Mike!

Even if this doesn't become the official '3rd' I would still be interested in going.
Let me know if you want to team up.
