I see that the listed length stated on B/H's site is 18". Is that with or w/o the lens hood ?

Sounds really off. That thing's a monster, even without the hood. I know the minimum focus distance is 18 feet, but if that really is the length, I'd have to say without the hood. I believe all lens' lengths are without hood.

How 'bout that...18''. Then again, all of these lenses are far smaller than I expected. I was expecting the 300 2.8L IS to be pretty good size. Without the lens hood, it's rather tiny, I think.

A 600 can actually be handheld if you really want for a shot or 2 or propped out a car window. Belongs on a strong tripod most of its life though.
