I have that combo but only used it once as I found it to be crap compared with my 100-400,the 1.4 on the 70-200 is realy good.:D:D

Does anyone have any experience with the EF 200 F/2.8L and TC's? I know it's a stellar lens without TC and it seems fine with the 1.4xTC. Looking through pbase I've noticed alot of people using a 2x TC with this lens and the results seem pretty darn good to my eyes (mostly for wildlife/birding and such). Anybody here have anything to share? Thanks.

Really depends what size you're going to be looking at the resultant pic at.
Pixel peeping and they're pretty soft but 6x4 or 8x10 and you may not notice.

Sometimes the converters are the difference between getting a pic that needs to be touched up a bit and not getting any pic at all.

Thanks for the feedback guys, ultimately I want an image good enough to make any size print out of but I realize that there is a sacrafice to IQ when using the 2x TC.

I'm upgrading my telephoto range from the 70-300 in my sig but I really can't decide if I want to get the 70-200 F/4 for versatility and IQ (and maybe add a 1.4 TC down the road) or if I want to get the 200 F/2.8 and some teleconverters for speed and dof. If the IQ was good w/ a 2x I'd have a 400mm lens in it as well and that would probably sway my decision.

The 2.8 IS and 100-400 are out of my budget, this is my compromise.haha

I'd try a Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Not much more than a Canon 70-200 f4

I use my 2x and 1.4x stacked on my 400 5.6L with really good results... Now are they the same result as the naked lens. Keep in mind I am using a tripod when I do this. With the 1.4x on my 400 5.6 my af is slower and I only have the center af point. With the 2x and also the stacked converters I have to MF...It is all what you practice... I know of a few pros that will use the stacked combos all the time....

Here is an example image from the other day...

Looks good Reewik! thanks for sharing, I'd expect similar results from the 200 w/ a 2x TC. Doubtful I'd stack 'em.

NordieBoy - a 2.8 70-200 and eventually a TC would be the best of both worlds. I could scrounge up a bit extra and pick up the sigma over the 70-200 F/4 or 200 prime. What puts me off from it is the size and weight really.

It does well with a EF 2X II TC although the AF will slow up, the 300 f4L IS also works well with the EF 2X II as long as you can handle manual focus.

If you prefer 100% crops to graphs you can get those via the menu, for the 200mm navigate via the f-stops (external link).

I use both Canon extenders with my 70-200. When I can afford more & bigger glass I won't use the 2X on that lens and use the 1.4X less than I do now. I find it convienient to have a converter in your bag for those unexpected oppotunities instead of carrying another big lens.
