Thought I might post this here, as the rumors section didn't get much attention.

Will this lens ever (EF 35-80mm) be brought back in the realm of canon lenses, in an L format or even with IS?

It's the one thing that I feel would fill the gap between my 17-40 f4/L and
70-200 f/4L, and would be perfect for me. Wonder if they ever will bring it back...and if they do, how much of a demand it would have out there, especially with 1.6x type cameras.

Any ideas? Would anyone even care about it? Or let it just remain dead...?

it would be the wierdest range ever on a crop camera. Just get a 24-70 and be done with it.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

no offence, but 35-80 is a quite useless range. 35 isnt wide enough to really be useful, especailly on a crop camera. you would be much further ahead getting a 24-70.

Right, but then what about the people that have the full frame 5D? I was thinking of upgrading to it...currently have the 20D listed on ebay...with auction ending in an hour. If I do upgrade to the 5D, then that lens would make total sense, no?

the 24-105 F4L is actually one of the highest aclaimed lens for the 5D. canon stopped making the 35-80 because 24-70 is much more useful. the difference from 24-35 is much more significant than 70-80. Im not trying to saying that your idea is off, many people want lenses that do not overlap ap much as possible, but in this case, it would be making a less useful lens just for the sake of filling a gap. i also find that the 50 prime is a good bridge between those two lenses, and gives you better lowlight capabilities

You won't see a zoom in the Canon lineup end at 80 again, I don't think. All the xx-80 zooms were around when the telephotos started at 80 (see the 80-200 f/2.8L, which I happen to own). Now that all of Canon's telephoto zooms start at 70mm, the mid-range zooms will almost certainly end there.

Makes perfect sense. Yet, I think that for me...it might make sense to have them bring it back...or something in the 40-70 range (+/- some millimeters). I beleive that I think too logically about numbers, so to me, that range would fit the bill.

But, I guess it won't happen any time soon, eh?
