I've got both lenses too. Every so often I go back to the 75-300.....every and each time the lens surprises me and makes me think about tiny image quality differences between lenses which are a world apart pricewise.

I also have the 100-400L and the 75-300 and here is another comparison of both lenses mounted to a 5D and set at 300mm f/8:

100-400L @ 300mm f/8
75-300 @ 300mm f/8


Here are 100% crops of the photos
100-400L @ 300mm f/8 100% crop
75-300 @ 300mm f/8 100% crop

A nice shot! Judging from the 100% chop...
the red apple - I cant notice any difference
the yellow apple - the 100-400L has better resolution, eventhough it is OOF.
