'Real' attempt as other times I got too fed up with my camera and gave up. The bigma is still a little too soft when I look at other peoples pictures on this board. Time for some spends maybe.

I tried several different settings, different lenses, AWB settings and some angles, so some C&C would be appreciated. All the images are uncropped, unPPd so perhaps may benefit from a touch USM.

Cheers...

Hi!

I do a fair bit of karting (and photography of karting!), and I think you've got some good shots there. I'm not particularly skillful in post-processing, but I'm not sure if USM is needed in all of your photos.

Take this one for example: http://racingcarsonline.orcon.net.nz/slides/RK1F0636.html (external link)
The driver & kart look to be nice and sharp to me, clearly there is some motion blur (which is not a bad thing), do you have the shot settings to hand?

I don't have any experience of the Bigma, but I imagine it's a hefty thing to hand hold. Are you using a tri/monopod at all?

I have a gallery of shots from my team's exploits here in the UK - my particular favourite is this picture (external link) (although that may be because it's the only one I've sold!).

Do you do any karting yourself?

Cheers,
John.

No I'm not a karter (more tintop) although I have done a small bit in the UK, mainly indoor stuff. One problem I did find was these buggers don't half shift and with bigma I find tracking/panning a pain tightly cropped. Lens was supported on the fencing.

There's probably too much background in most of them for my liking.

I think some of those karters I recognise from Nelson :)
I like white and blue suits as the AF picks up more quickly on the good contrasts.

Trying to get a shot of a cool carbon-fibre helmet as is scoots past at full speed takes a few attempts :D

More karting this weekend and I'll try and get some static shots of the display at the start of the Rally of Nelson as well.

Taken with the Sigma 70-300 APO

It was only a club day so would have been a long way to go!! The Southern Series is in a couple of weeks. How far from the track were you for that pic? In all mine I was probably too far away. I might ask a favour from a driver this weekend and while it's lunch or something, stand on the apex of a bend as they go past (doesn't need to be extreme speed) with a WA and see what effect I can get.

That was the Blenheim track for the NZ Schools Champs.
Back straight probably about 10m away.

Something like this but using a WA from the inside.
Hmmm.
My widest lens is 28mm :(

Just get them to sit a kart there static and hang out of it exaggerating the turning/leaning etc. (with an old flying helmet/goggles/mustache) :D

Yeah, like that but from the inside. My widest is 15 so I want to be standing on the side pod when I take the picture. (Bit like the dodgems at the funfair with the guy taking money standing on the little rail.)
