True or false?
The 1.6 multiplier does not apply to the focal length when using an EF-S lens. That is, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm can only give a maximum 85mm zoom while the EF 85mm will give you a 135mm zoom on the Rebel.

Thanks in advance.

99% sure that is False... It just refers to it being a different mount... Think EF-S 10-22mm. There's no way that an EF-S lens is the only one with a true 10mm FOV.

False.
All lenses use the same focal length numbers.
So a 17-85mm EF-S still needs to be "multiplied" by 1.6x for the 35mm feild of view equivelent.

Why would you be only 99% sure :)? You have the Drebel and the kit lens (which is an ef-s lens)

Just to be sure... I'd hate to jump out there (especially first) and get my teeth kicked in.

Thought as much. There are still very few times when I am absolutely sure of the right answer and I just pounce on those!!

Totally false. An 85mm lens is always an 85mm lens regardless of the camera it is attached to.

It's obvious there are some new folks here who still don't understand what the "crop factor" is all about. Please read this thread, and you will probably be enlightened..... https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=45388

As already stated an 85mm EF lens gives the same result as an 85mm EF-S lens on a 1.6 crop body.

But just to be picky, the crop factor does not change the focal length of a lens. Maybe a better way to state it would be that an 85mm lens on a 1.6 crop body gives the same reach as a 135mm lens on a full format body. 1.6 only indicates the crop when compared to full format, it's not a focal length multiplier. :)

Oh, it's not the math that bothers me... Bringing up the FOV vs. Focal Length point just tends to derail the thread.... And normally ends up with one or two that just won't play nice.

Derail? It's the root issue here... if we were not interested in equivalent fields of view, there would be no discussion(s), and no concept of crop factor.
