Just wanted to share some old (2 years old) pictures from my first night shoot. These were taken with a Canon Digital IXUS 430. I recommend you take a look at the larger versions of the pictures (just click on the pictures).

This was the night I really started to see the limitations of a P&S camera, and after this I started looking at the DSLRs.

C&C is welcome as usual :)

That last one is great, with the reflections in the water and all. seems like you did well considering there is hardly any noise!

This is the smae reason I upgraded from my FujiFilm S5000...stupid max 2sec exposure....

Andy, Cali: thanks for the comments :)

The biggest problem I had here, and even more the same night when we were standing above a highway... was that I was not able to control the aperture on the Ixus. I wanted to get loooong trails from the backlights of the cars, but setting the shutter speed to long enough, it really overexposed the picture. But of these ones, I think especially the third one came out quite good (especially for being the first night shoot). :D

The last one is my favorite too. And I have to admit, I've never EVER seen anything of that quality come from the automatic ixus...and truly, I'm not dissing the ixus either...I'm just absolutely shocked at how well it exposed these (I've got a couple of P&S, when left to their own, do nothing like this)...I didn't click on the large ones so I'm just basing my opinion on what you posted...which is very, very nice!

edit: I was not aware that you could control the shutter speed...I thought it was fully auto...

Well, if you put it in manual mode you can either set the exposure to -2 - +2 or the shutter speed between 1 – 15 seconds (not lower than one second though). You can also set the ISO (50, 100, 200, 400 or AUTO). But I would have wanted to step the aperture down, which of course was an option Canon didn’t want to give me. But @ ISO 50, the noise is pretty low.

On the other side of the pond the Ixus 430 is known as the Powershot S430 ;)
