10-22 or 17-40L do u need both?

As the title say, do I need both. So far I have the kit lens and a 50mm 1.8

When I got my nifty i realised how bad the kit was, so was looking to replace it, and I love the effects that can be achieved with the 10-22 so have arranged to buy one, but have also found a good deal on a 17-40L, So the question is do you need both? or would I be better getting something like the 17-85 IS?

I personally use a 12-24 and 24-70 because they neither overlap nor leave gaps. I'm also on crop cameras (ie not full frame). If I had a full frame I'd either be happy with just the 24-70, or get the 17-40/16-35 for more wide-ification.

My personal opinion is the 10-22 and 17-40 don't really match up very well, but others will disagree I'm sure.

Thats the kind of line I was thinking along, but wasn't sure, hence the question.

BTW is for a 30D, not a full frame

I have a 17-40L, plus a couple of other cheapos, then upgraded and bought a Sigma 10-20 at the wide end. I found I only use one or the other, and wonder just why I spent so much money on two pretty similar lens. In reality I would probably prefer just the 17-40L, and have a 1.3x crop body

A L lens, and the 10-22 are in another league compared to the 17-85!

No need to google. It's just the 1D, 1D Mark II, and 1D Mark IIn.

I'd get the sigma 10-20 and then either the canon 17-85 IS or the sigma 17-70. Got the latter delievered yesterday and it's great!
I find the 17-40 a great lens but too short on the long range.

There is a hugh difference in terms of the view between 10mm and 17mm. If you need the ultra wide angle of 10mm, you have no choice but to get the 10-22. Instead of the 17-40L, you may consider having a Canon 24-70L/24-105L as your walkabout lens (or a sigma 17-70, sigma 18-50, tamron 17-50, sigma 24-70, tarmron 28-70..... if you don't mind using 3rd party lens).

LOL me either.

If I was to have one or the other on a 30D body, I'd just stick with the 17-40. Very solid, very durable, exceptional quality, and quite a good all round lens, suitable for landscapes, people shots..Whereas the 10-22 would give too much distortion between the 10-17mm end

Hmmm, I'm even more confused now. I don't need the 10-22 its more of a I'd like to have it for a play. I really need a decent replacement for the kit lens.

I had both when I used a 20D, and I thought they complimented each other quite well (I used them both mainly for landscapes). I basically used the 17-40 by default unless I wanted something wider, in which case I'd grab the 10-22. Seemed to work well.

Thanks for your responses, i'm now swaying towards the 24-105 instead if the 17-40, but the deals not so good. so will need to save a little more.
