Hi there,

this is a series of herons from a place we went today it was a sanctuary that has bird hides to view wild birds and a few captive birds we spent 5 hours there and I filled 2 x 2gig cards it was simply superb and I got some shots I am proud of, even if these herons are captive birds most of the other shots were wild birds.

These are a breeding pair of White Faced Herons (going back to photograph chicks in 2 weeks) They are in breeding dress and the feathers are new and bright. These are as shot except for a small crop on the last one and USM after resize settings were 60, .5, 0.

Comments most welcome.

They are really are bright in full sun and a delight to watch.

Regards Darren

Hi Darren,
# 1 is a beautiful shot, great colors, IMHO I would like to have seen a little more room on each side of the bird.
# 2 good capture and sharp, IMO it is a little blown out there are no details on the white.
There is a difference in the color of the birds in each shot is this because of male & female? or the sunlight as you mentioned.
Regards,
Clare

The male seemed brighter however not noticably I think the sun played a role...

Very nice images. Wonderful rich and saturated color.
I assume this is your 70-200mm lens' result image but optically you seem very close, closer than 200mm. Did you have the opportunity of getting so close to these friendly birds or extender or any other lens is in use?

Nice colours and a great capture of a rare oppertunity for most. Beautifil images. Good focus and composition - something we don't hvae a lot of control of when photographing wildlife.

To me they do look a little too sharp,
and #1 may have lost some appeal in post prcessing.

Hi All thanks for looking,

Samson when I go bush/birdwatching I wear full camoflage everything but my face, even made a camo cover for my camera. If you wait and make small slow movements you can get near most birds. Last weekend I had a bird sit for 5min on my head and cleen itself.....have the mmmmm stain to prove it lol the 70-200mm F/4 L is by far the best lens I own

regards Darren

Dear Darren;

I feel so jealous of you being able to achieve such results. I am really good to chaise any bird from 100 yards or so.:)
You reminded me of "Vezon Thierry", a French photographer with same talent you posses. Check this one (LINK-1) (external link) that is my favorite picture in Bea Eater galley LINK-2). (external link) This guy did 3 months of what you described to complete this gallery. To say the least; Hard work pays back rewardingly.

Keep up the good work and post more of your nice images.
TFS.
