Just wondering how much is that piece of glorified plastic for the 70-300IS? Such the necessary evil. Why can't Canon include it?

It's $45 at B&H.

That's one of the reasons I don't buy Canon lens unless there is no comparable alternative.
Way overpriced and doesn't even include a lens hood. They they try to rip you off by making you pay this much for a simple piece of plastic that probably cost less than a dollar to make.

Hah, isn't that the truth!

I think I got one off ebay for $25, but you always roll the dice when ebay is involved.

edit: and the hood is cheap plastic and I HATE how it mounts to the lens

Yeah, I (begrudgingly) sprung for the hood, as well. It is kind of disheartening to have to pay extra (and not just a little extra) for an item that came included with my Tamron and Tokina lenses and is also included (along with tripod ring) with the Sigma 150 macro that will be my next lens.

I love Canon, but I DO hate how they take more advantage of us consumers by selling the cheap #$% hood for $30+....I mean they already overcharged you for the lens...the least they could do is give you a free piece of plastic to protect your investment.

I got one off of ebay....which actually turned out to be Adorama, for about $35. Adorama normally has it for $39. Yes, it is cheap plastic and should be included with the lens. Only been out with new lens and lens hood 3 times....and noticed a scratch on the lens hood today. Well, better the hood than the lens. I guess it did its job.
