I'm thinking of switching to Pentax!?

I can't believe it, but after 10 years with Canon I'm thinking of switching to Pentax in 2007.

Why? Because the new K10D has all of the things I wish my 30D had:

Weather sealing
Anti-shake
Anti-dust

See here: http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/10249/pentax_k10d/ (external link)

And all for the price of a 400D.

Not only that, but the new Pentax glass (developed with Tokina) is also weather sealed and with SSM (equiv. of USM)... see here:
http://www.dpreview.com …102pentaxdastarlenses.asp (external link)

The weather sealing is the biggest factor for me, along with the cost.

If they get high ISO and focus speed/accuracy right, you may see a lot of Canon gear for sale in April '07...

Anyone else find these new Pentax offerings intriguing?

But will it be able to take digital images at high ISO as noise free as can be done with a Canon dSLR?

If it makes you happy go for it, they are all competing with each other so your results shouldnt be much different to a Canon.

The anti shake is a feature I would most like, Canon should really have put that on the 400D to keep up with everyone else, the only downside I can see which would put me off of that camera is it uses SD cards, I have kinda got attached to compactflash cards now.

I did not think much of in-camera IS before, but now I'm salivating at the thought of having 2-3 stop in-camera IS with prime lenses. That would be very sweet indeed, and may prove to be too much of a temptation for many prime lens lovers...

Do not overlook the fact that if your subjects breathe or move, IS is not helpful to resolve subject motion during longer duration shutter!

I wish they would all drop the IS BS, it seems to me we would be much better off if they would figure out how to make sensors that could capture images at 3200/6400/12800 with the sharpness we currently get at 1600 and you pick up your 2-3 stops that way.

My girlfriend just bought a K100D and loves it. She has been a Pentax lover for a lot of years now. It is a great camera and I just love that we can do this together and have a good time doing it:) I think I will buy here the K10D for a Christmas present...Pentax is a good company and I like that they are getting into the DSLR market and doing a good job of it. I still like a Canon but you have to admit it, Pentax is a good product....Hopfully they will push *ikon out of the way and be a good compeditor with Canon...It is good for all of us...

That may be true, but this is the first sub $1000 body I've seen with weather sealing - same goes for the glass I mentioned.

Doesn't anyone else find the weather sealing at this price point appealing (maybe I'm the only one with paid outdoor assignments that finds myself scared of rain??)

I don't find weather sealing to be a deal breaker. I like high ISO cleanliness. And if I absolutely needed weather sealing, I'd get a 1 series. I could afford it then too because if I'm shooting in inclement weather, I'm also charging a premium to do it. After all, it's not just my camera that's out there.

Not to mention - weather sealing doesn't mean weather proof.

I don't shoot in conditions that require it with the exception of a family beach outing.

'Weather sealing' is not 'water proofing'. It simply makes it a bit more difficult for water to enter, but it will NOT keep out water entirely!

I'm not at all tempted by any other system, in camera IS, weather-sealing, anti-dust, etc. not withstanding. It's not that I think Canon has the best system out there, but rather I see it as a "system" and not just a camera body here or a lens there. It's a system of cameras, lenses, flashes and other accessories from which I've acquired an extensive set of components that suit my needs. Additionally, I've invested a lot of time and brain power into learning the system, its quirks and its capabilities over the last 25 years. To have to do that with another system would to me be counterproductive.

It may be tempting to someone just starting out in the DSLR realm, but to those of us who have been around a while Pentax (and Sony for that matter) will have to come up with something leaps and bounds better than this to get us to switch.
