I have the kit lens and the 50 1.8.... Id like to get something that zooms farther and is good. I was looking at the 70-200 but its $600.

What other lenses are there? I heard there was a 24-105L? is that any good?

the 24-105 is $1200, so thats out of your budget if the 70-200 is. but i would highly reccomend saving up for the 70-200 F4L. also, you can find one used for a lot less than that.

What is your budget? The previously mentioned and well-regarded Sigma 70-300 (be sure it's the APO version) goes for $220 USD and the very good Canon EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM offers great IQ and fast, accurate ring-USM focusing goes for 280 USD. I'd strongly recommend the Canon if it's within your budget.

I just got the Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS for $565. I have only used it three times....including today, and I think it is very nice. Now that I have IS....I think there will be no going back ;)

Straight out of the camera...no processing at all.

I just got my Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS yesterday, and so far I'm really, really happy with it.. Sadly I haven't had much time the last two days to do much but take a quick shot here and there... But I'm planning a little trip this weekend so hopefully I'll get some nice shots!! But I LOVE the IS.. Very nice on a longer lens!!

You have a limited choice based on your budget - if you are really stretched and want the most bang for buck, I'd recommend the sigma APO macro 70-300 - it has a great rep.

BUT - if you can bear it - save up for longer and get the good stuff from the start. the 70-200 f/4 is amazingly good, and you won't regret this lens. the 70-300 IS lens from Canon is also excellent - so long as you get the new one.

the Tamron 70-300 is not to be sniffed at either - does an honest job for a good budget. It's easy to get carried away with L fever, and for most of us it's totally unneccessary - so buy what does the job for the money you have.

Best advice - you don't have to spend huge $ for nice glass, but it makes life easier if you can spend a bit more freely. I'd suggest decide what you really really want and then save for it.

good luck!

Yeah I have $1500 saved up from taco hell, pretty good eh? $6.40 an hour:oops:

But I think im going save my money for another Trans am... Once I get another car, im was planning on getting a video camera and/or a better lens for the XT. (I do both video and picture editing but dont have a good video camera anymore). I had looked at the 70-300 APO a long time ago, but heard that the 70-200 is a lot better, so thats probably what ill get.

You should be able to get good used copies of the 70-200 f4 for around 500. Have seen many here and on fm marketplace.

It is of course an excellent lens....
