I was walking around 110th on the west side of Manhattan... in the middle of the biggest city in the world... sitting next to a fountain taking pictures. There were no fences... when all of a sudden, I see this big white bird walking around. I can't tell if it's a peacock or some kind of pheasant.

Does anyone know? It doesn't have red eyes... is it albino?

Talk about unexpected... it had beautiful plumage though. It was a nice surprise...

I'm just so surprised to see it not fenced in anywhere. It MUST have escaped from somewhere... any ideas where? I hope it's still ok...

Thanks!

It's a peacock. Since it's in NYC, it's probably a rare NBC bird leftover from the days before color television :-) Great capture... you won't see one of these every day, I bet.

I don't know... where exactly are the NBC offices in Manhattan?

It's too bad we won't see those walking around every day... makes me wonder what NY would be like if they were...

Some do get confused, because we are used to seeing very colourful peacocks that a white one must be albino, but no, it is a colour variety of an Indian Peacock.

I would love to see this bird suddenly arrive. What a nice surprise and I bet you are glad that you had your camera ready. Thanks for sharing this magnificent bird. Nicely composed shots, well done.

Nice capture, but after the first or second shots, I'd have been shooting people expressions. ;)

HA! I'm in New York... there were not fazed in the least. I was looking around to see if anyone was as surprised as me... no one. No one was even looking at it even though it apparently had no fear of humans and was just walking around standing really close to people.

I'm still wondering where it came from. I felt like I was in some wierd, fantastical dimension... between the fountain with it's allegorical figures and the white peacock... it felt kind of surreal.

Place yourself here (below) and add that peacock... and tell me you wouldn't feel the same:

Yeah, I lived in NYC for awhile. I can picture that. Although after watching a recent PBS thing about hawks near the park and the big fan club they seem to draw every day, I'm a little surprised a white peacock could go ignored.

So, I was just informed that it is very common to see white peacocks in those areas... apparently, they're born and raised there and don't usually venture past the WIDE OPEN gates...

I was also informed that there are white peacocks and turkeys somewhere in a park in Staten Island... I'll go on the hunt and get pictures for you.

Yeah, I live near the only virgin forrest left in manhattan (very northern tip) and they have an eagle rookery. I've been waiting for my camera to go out there.

Thanks!
