I have a 550EX and G2. Does anyone have any experience / thoughts on using the Canon Off Camera Shoe Adaptor?

I have used the G2 with the 420EX on a flash bracket with the "Off the Shoe Cord 2" extensively. In fact it's the only way I use the G2 with external flash. Now I use that cord with my 10D. It works like a charm. Full ETTL, without the one dimensional look of pictures taken with on camera flash. It is definitely worth the $80 for the cord.

I use the off camera shoe cord II with my 420 EX and G2. It's as Scott says... works like a charm... but I use mine free hand to direct light where I want it to go. With E-TTL you come up smiling every time.

Thanks Scott and Paul. I couldn't understand why but Canon UK recommended not to use the adaptor so I really appreciate the real world answers before I splash the cash.
This is a great forum - why Canon don't provide a link to it is a mystery.
Thanks again - Alan

I use a 550EX/Off Camera Cord 2 combo most of the time, both indoors & out. The flash is mounted on an old metal Vivitar flash bracket, I think from the 386 series gun. 'Setup works great with my G2, but IMHO much to expensive particularly in UK...

If its any help, I use an old but powerfull Cobra 700 flash gun mounted on a support thats fired by a slave device activated from the camera 's flash. Therefore there is no electrical connection between the camera and flash gun so there is no worry about frying the camera's internal electrics. The Flash is not TTL but i use the M mode to set shutter speed and aperture and then its trial and error. Cost - had the flash from my old EOS600 the slave was about £15 from Jessops (UK)

Hello All,

I have a G2 and just purchased a EX380 flash. I have had terrible luck with my G@ and cam flash producing very bad red eye. My hope is this EX380 flash will solve that problem by bouncing the flash. Now I am reading that I should not use the shoe for the flash, how do you hold the cam and flash and where do you point the flash. I was hoping to mount it to the shoe and aim the flash up.

You reduce red eye by increasing the angle between the flash and the subject to camera line. You can do this by angling the flash 45-60 degrees up if there is a white ceiling to bounce off of, or getting the flash off the hot shoe on a flash bracket, with the "Off the Shoe cord II".

I read your post with interest I to have a Cobra 700-AF I have never tried using with my G6 but would like to have the option .You talk about a slave device could you explain more please. My Cobra is an off camer one, does this mean it runs off a slave I have been unsure as whether it would do my G6 harm.
