my 35L is sharpest @2.8. And my great little 50mm macro gets sharpest around 5.6, great little lens that.

Yes, f/2.8 is 3 f/stops down from max on that lens, proving what has been said, although the f/5.6 or f/8 statement is not quite as true on this lens.
