OK well my buddy got this lens today for his new D80...now I thought they are supposed to have a silent focus system. This lens seems to make some noise..not loud but my 150 sigma Macro makes zero noise. all you hear is a little woosh his as a def louder sound. Is this typical of this lens or something wrong with his.

Edit: I know when i was playing with that 120-300 the other day its focus was Silent as well..could it be cause its a nikon version of the lens..I dont think that would make a difference

I'd say the 150EX and 70-200EX have similar AF "noise". Both are relatively silent.

SIgma's HSM is very very quiet,. but not exactly "silent"
USM is remarkeable in this respect to being almost completely silent.

I must be within 1 foot of my lens, and pay attention in a silent room to hear the HSM on my sigma. In normal shooting mode, I can't hear it when taking pics.

The older camera may focus slower making the sound seem louder...

Just a guess...

Whoa wait a second. Nikons have the motor in the camera that drives the lens. So if the Sigma lens uses the cameras motor it will be noiser than the Canon. But if the Sigma uses its own motor then it should be as quite as the Canon version of the lens.

I'm going to have to talk to my Nikon bud. Be right back.
