Whoa wait a second. Nikons have the motor in the camera that drives the lens. So if the Sigma lens uses the cameras motor it will be noiser than the Canon. But if the Sigma uses its own motor then it should be as quite as the Canon version of the lens.

I do not think that the boday has the focus drive in it.

If I put a Sigma 70-200mm on a 300D it is louder than when mounted on a 30D. Plus it focuses faster. That is what i meant.

My 70-200 makes some sound too. Quiet yes, but not silence. It makes a soft click when the motor stops. Not sure it's it's normal.

The Canon 70-200 f4 and 70-210 USM is quieter.

Maybe a little testing. Is the lens noise louder than the shutter?

Oh no way..its just got a smooth sound as it moves through its range. but its not totally silent like my macro.

Mine is about the same as the 17-40.

I will add that the 70-200 focuses slower then the 120-300 does... so maybe that is what you are hearing to... just taking longer. The big sigma may be making noise, but it is for such a short duration it seems to be less. Then again... even the Canon vs nikon version look a little different so there could be different mechanics in it too. As to USM being more silent.... I don't know. My 300 wasn't... quite.. yes.. silent... I guess it just depends on what you consider silent. While I owned it and my sigma.. I really didn't notice a markable difference. You can't campare noise made by small lenses with large ones because the distance the elements must move can be quit different.

guess turn up the volume some to

ok another problem seems to be this lens is double the shutter speed of any other one. Like my 70-200 f4 at f4 will have a shutter speed of 1/10 and his 70-200 at f4 will be 1/5 both at 200mm
why is it no matter what his is always half the shutter speed of any other lens with the same distance and fstop

ok we where doing some testing..With any lens he uses and same ISO and fstop. My camera with any lens I used would almost doulbe the shutter speed of what he got..so thought maybe it was a problem in the D80 so we tried his D50 and same thing. I am getting double the shutter speed with same focal length same ISO and same fstop...I am guessing its the metering

Sounds to me like the Canon sensor is more sensitive than the Nikon sensor. Of course this is not a "scientific" test. Better to test the same model camera against another.

I concur with Crashoran, the old sigma 70-200 HSM is very similar to the 85/1.8. The new macro version I think is louder again.

Your recordings sound about right to me, but it is a bit hard to tell how loud it is.

maybe because your macro is a prime lens?
