Best Landscape Lens for 30D

I am planing to go to the USA next spring and do a road trip down the Blue Ridge parkway.

I'm thinking it will mainly be landscape shots, and would like your thoughts on what lens I should get for this sort of trip. Body is a 30D and budget would be about £1000.

Check B&H used stuff they have a few wides available at the moment with in your range. 17-40mm I think would be good. IMHO

17 is good, but on occasion may be too narrow...

10-20 Sigma + 17-50 Tamron should fit the bill superbly.

You could just stick with the kit lens + 10-20.

With your budget, I'd get the 16-35L. Or save a bit and get the 17-40L plus an item or two from your wish list!...

17-40L wasn't wide enough for me...
The EF-S 10-22 is awesome, the Sigma 10-20 was nealy as good.

Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM £330
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L UIS £730

This looks to cover a good focal range, or should I be looking for faster lenses

I assume you're talking only about the 24-105 with respect to faster lenses. Because there's really no other wide option of a 1.6 crop that's faster than that. Sure you could get a 14 2.8, but that's still not as wide on a crop camera.

As for the 24-105, well, there's no real answer there and will ignite another 24-70 v. 24-105 -- f2.8 v. IS debate. Are you going to buy in the US or the UK (since it's a US trip). If it's the US, that 1000 pounds will get you quite quite a lot.

how about the Tokina 12-24 ? Meant to be a very good lens...

that is a superb choice, excellent lenses and excellent coverage, if you have the cash then go for it.

I'd buy either lens in a shot in your position.

The Canon 10-20 (or Tokina 12-24) combined with a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS make a great combination for a 30D. Combine this with a 70-200 or 70-300 w/1.4 Teleconverter and you've got some nice telephoto range for closer up nature shots. (I've gone with the Canon 10-20, 17-55, and 70-200 2.8 IS path for my own 30D lenses)

I love my 17-40mm L for landscape. However, I believe the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM fills the bill for ultra wide angle on 1.6x body. I personally just can’t get myself to invest in the EF-S mounts.

ONE OTHER THING....wait to buy the lens in USA...prices in UK seem much higher. your 1000 BP (sorry no "pound" key) would equal about $1900.00 US. That would buy you a 16-35L, 17-40L, AND 10-22!

Sure both are wider and faster than a 24-105.

But that's not the point. The idea, I thought, was faster glass while retaining a wide angle lens. And that's just not available for a 1.6 crop sensor. The wide angle zooms that are typically used for a 1.6 crop are the 10-22, Sigma's 10-20 or (to a lesser degree) 12-24, tonkina 12-24, and tameron 11-something. None of those are f2.8.

Sure, a 17-55 is a great lens, but it's more of a standard zoom, rather than a wide angle one (as is a 16-35 when it's used on a 1.6 crop sensor).

On a 30D, the widest lens (zoom) you can purchase will be the Canon 10-20.

For all practical purposes the 17-55 and 16-35 yield the same wide angle- in reality only off by 1.6mm. I consider these to be the same and would expect someone who wants to shoot ultrawide on a 30D to purchase either the Canon 10-20 or Tokina 12-24 to use in conjunction with a more standard zoom.
