Sure both are wider and faster than a 24-105.
But that's not the point. The idea, I thought, was faster glass while retaining a wide angle lens. And that's just not available for a 1.6 crop sensor. The wide angle zooms that are typically used for a 1.6 crop are the 10-22, Sigma's 10-20 or (to a lesser degree) 12-24, tonkina 12-24, and tameron 11-something. None of those are f2.8.
Sure, a 17-55 is a great lens, but it's more of a standard zoom, rather than a wide angle one (as is a 16-35 when it's used on a 1.6 crop sensor).
