I have the Canon Rebel XT and I just ordered and received the Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens. The box says that it's for the Canon-AF. Is this lens compatible with my camera? I thought I had done lots of research but when I got the lens today and started taking test shots, they were horrible. Not a focused one in the bunch. That got me wondering if I had the right lens for my camera.

Please someone help me out here.

Thanks,

Karman

if it mounts on the camera i would suspect it is the correct one.

If you half press the shutter or pressing * button depending on your setup will bring the subject into focus and if you move to another subject much further or closure and press the button the camera should refocus. If not make sure the lens is in AF not MF. If it is in AF mode then remove lens and re-install lens and check again. Otherwise you might have a bad lens.

That is not out of focus. You just discover Bokeh. W/ such a large aperature you'll need to be more carefull as to where you want to be in focus because it will have a very shallow DOF.

I checked and I am in AF mode. I use the back button for focusing. I'm pressing the back button to focus and pressing the shutter release to take the picture.

I will remove the lens and put it back on. I only have 7 days to figure out if it's bad or not so I'm trying to work swiftly.

Thank you so much.

it doesnt look that bad to me. BUT, in the case of this picture, it would most likely be camera shake. you are at 75mm but only using 1/30th shutter speed. it probably would have come out better if you had used f2.8, and mabye bumped the ISO up and gotten the shutter speed around 1/100th. Have you tried the lens in more controlled conditions (on a tripod, various settings, ect..)?

Try this exercise, set the camera to center point focus. This where only the center red light will appear when you are focusing. Aim the center point at the subjects eye and depress the shutter button half way and hold. Reframe the shot to your liking while holding the shutter button halfway (focus lock) and depress the button all the way. Be gentle when depressing the button otherwise you'll get camera shake (blurr)

When I crop in at 100%, everything is fuzzy. Am I expecting too much? I see other shots with this lens and I just imagine what mine might look like. So you think the photo is in focus? I locked on the eyes but you would never know it by looking at this photo.

Raise your ISO so that your shutter speed is higher as Bill recommend. You need at least 1/focal length shutter speed so try 1/125 to be on the safe side. Brace your on something solid depress the shutter button smoothly so you're not jerking the camera. Left hand holding the lens and right hand holding the camera. Elbows tuck in not sticking out. left foot foward and slightly bend. Hold your breath when you are ready to depress the shutter button. These are some suggestion to prevent camera blurr.

For that shutter speed, at 75mm, it looks pretty good to me. You're pushing the envelope for a sharp handheld shot. I'd say the focus looks ok, probably just a little camera shake giving you the impression that it's out of focus.

Ok, this isn't much better. Sorry the subject isn't good...kids aren't cooperating anymore. I selected the center focus point and focused on the eye. I'm also set on the best quality setting. The ISO is probably too high but I would think I would still get a good image but with more noise right? I focused on the eye but why is the mouth in better focus?

It's pretty pathetic right? I just want to get one good shot so I can feel good about the lens. My subjects are falling asleep on me so I will have to switch to something else (smile).
