Red Tail Hawks, C&C please :)

Took these on a hike above Simi Valley today. Its so hard to get a good, crisp shot of these guys in flight, almost need double the focal length, but then it would not be good for hiking. The perched shot was tough too, I followed him in flight to his tree, got cut up by brances and what not getting this shot. Both taken with the 400 F/5.6L

A lot of people take much closer shots, but I like how you give the bird space in these shots. I assume these are crops, right? If so, maybe the first one you could crop differently making there more space on the right. It's up to you. These shots are excellent as is.

Love the second one, Definetly a national geographic shot.

Thank you for the comment. Getting closer I am starting to think is about being in the right place with camera in hand. Its funny, if I go up there with no gear, they will fly right by me, I bring the camera gear and they soar thousands of feet above

This isn't only true with hawks, but everything! lol

You must carry you camera at all times to capture the right shot, or chances are, you will miss it...Strange the way the world works huh?

I am learning that about the hawks. I now bring my 400 on all my hiking trips even though it adds considerable weight with the 1DMIIN, but I am determined to get the perfect shot of these guys

looks like you need a lenscoat
nice shots. wish i had my camera on me when hawks are about.

LOL, I am not in the forest or jungle looking for the hawks. We are out in the wide open, but I will think about it. Maybe one will land on the lens thinking its a branch

yea, well you could get the black one, or the more brown reeltree one.
haha, if they land on it you can use another body with a wideangle to take the shot

I like the white of the lens though, its a social statement of sorts j/k
