Not too long ago I picked up a microfiber lens cleaning cloth and it works well. Recently I've noticed in an auto parts stores microfiber cloths for cleaning cars - glass, mirrors, etc. These cloths look more in appearance like a regular 9"x9" terry bathroom washcloth only much finer in texture. They were sale priced at 2 for $.99. Any thoughts on using these for lens cleaning? Or reasons not to?

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

They're a much, much coarser weave and likely won't work as well - or at all.

I do use these types of cloths, sprayed with Endust for Electronics for wiping down all the gear... Removes dirt, fingerprints, etc. and leaves them like new.

If you can find a lens cleaning cloth called Scotch Bright, made by 3M is real good. I bought mine at Wal Mart.

The lens cleaning cloth is probably manufactured with finer, softer threads which will not scratcht the coating on your lenses. The microfiber cloths for house and car might have threads or material which would be harsh enough to scratch. I wouldn't risk it.

Quite honestly, I don't buy into the whole lens MF thing. Personally, I wouldn't want to re-use over and over the same surface that you cleaned your lens with the last time. I'm sure they work very well and don't leave lint behind... But still.

Disposable tissues, a blower and a brush for me. Use a sheet once, toss it.
