Good copies of this lens are obviously excellent, but it still doesn’t explain why there appears to be a considerable amount of photographers that feel the need to return the item for calibration. I'm sure that if all the problems were down to the individuals, then they would have similar problems with there other lens's too.

I like Canon, I chose my new camera system to be Canon, however, I would not get sycophantic about them, the prices of L glass (and even some normal glass) lens's are overpriced, particularly if you live in the UK, and for such a price I personally would expect better quality control.
No doubt some issues may be the photographers themselves, but with the amount of issues reported about this particular lens, suggests to me that Canon may need to address it further.

=Servo'd;2027118]7. Hey, how come you didn't use vbulletin's awesome poll feature? :(

1. No

my humble suggestion is to delete this thread and do it with a real poll :)

You know, for a genius, that was a pretty dumb question. Why would she make a poll when we aren't voting for something but answering a series of questions? Way to go Alex! ;) For that, you get -5 points for a total of -85 points.

I can just count the answers and post something in a day or so. Seems like many who've responded were satisfied. I will compile all the unsatisfied users' comments. This will allow people to look at the responses all together.

1. Do you own a 24-70L? <-- Yes

2. How long have you owned it? 1 mo., about 6 mos., about 1 year, or longer?<-- About a year now

3. Were you completely satisfied with it the day you got it? If not, what was the problem?<-- No, it was very soft when taking shots of landscapes or anything at distance...it has always been awesome as a portrait lens!

4. If you were not satisfied, what did you do? Return it? Send it for adjustment or repair? Work with it?<-- I worked with it, took 100's of practice shots and finally learned how to get good shots at distance. I used it at the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC this Spring and was absolutely delighted with my results

5. If you did have it adjusted, how does it work now?<-- Mine works just fine now with no adjustment...can't wait to try it on my soon to be ordered 30D next month!

6. If you had issues with it at first, do you think it was "user problems" more than the lens itself?<-- Clearly user problems

I hope this will clear up some of the threads that have been around lately about this lens. <-- IMHO this is an awesome lens with an equally awesome learning curve...let me add that I am a serious amatuer photographer who has returned to photography afer many years of neglect of the craft...I have three years of serious digital photography (G5 and for 20 months Canon dRebel 350) <-- I have had a "learning curve" with most of my new kit but I have figured most of the mechanics out...now, as CondyK says: work on composition

Thanks Suzie for putting this up on the forum...I do believe that the 24-70MM L gets unfair bad press.

I love the 24-70mm lens. Sure, it's a big'un but it's what is on my camera 90% of the time. Great build and IQ.

1. Do you own a 24-70L?

Yes

2. How long have you owned it? 1 mo., about 6 mos., about 1 year, or
longer?

about 1 year

3. Were you completely satisfied with it the day you got it? If not, what was the problem?

No, when used with a flash, this lens is wicked; fast, accurate and sharp. When used with extention tubes it produces some of the best macro images I have seen. When used as a regular lens in everyday situations, it stumbles to attain focus, it is not as sharp as my 24-105L IS.

4. If you were not satisfied, what did you do? Return it? Send it for adjustment or repair? Work with it?

I worked with it at first, had it calibrated by Canon of NJ.

5. If you did have it adjusted, how does it work now?

It remains as stated in the answer to question #3. In low-light situations, the lens is fantastic...in normal lighting or bright conditions it is not even of average quality, it constantly hunts for focus and oft times ends up missing the focus. The lens does the same thing on a variety of different bodies. So we can rule that out as well.

6. If you had issues with it at first, do you think it was "user problems" more than the lens itself?

I guess if trying to use a lens in sunlit conditions is a user problem, then that is the case. Personally, I think a lens should function well in most situations, especially if it is going to carry the "L" designation. As a specialty lens for use by indoor event photographers, I would highly recommend this lens. As for being an all purpose lens or walk around lens, I would endorse the 24-70 as being a nice paperweight, as it doesn't hold a candle to the 24-105L IS.

Yes

2. How long have you owned it? 1 mo., about 6 mos., about 1 year, or longer?

About a month.

3. Were you completely satisfied with it the day you got it? If not, what was the problem?

Yes, completely satisfied. My first big shoot with this lens as a primary was at a Rennaisance Faire where I took about 400 pictures, mostly with this lens. Most of the shots were candid shots of costumed people walking around the Faire. I experienced no focus problems that were not my own fault. (Gotta look out for some of the outlandiish costumes!) The colors "popped" out as if I were using saturated film. The length of the lens was ideally suited for this type of walkabout photography. A lot of the shots were with "fill-flash" because of the harsh sun and shadows during the middle of the day.

4. If you were not satisfied, what did you do? Return it? Send it for adjustment or repair? Work with it?

NA

5. If you did have it adjusted, how does it work now?

NA

6. If you had issues with it at first, do you think it was "user problems" more than the lens itself?

NA

I hope this will clear up some of the threads that have been around lately about this lens.

The camera I use is a 5D.

1. Do you own a 24-70L?
Not anymore.

2. How long have you owned it? 1 mo., about 6 mos., about 1 year, or longer?
About 6 months.

3. Were you completely satisfied with it the day you got it? If not, what was the problem?
Not stisfied at all the first day and not six monts later. The problems were:
No contrast or rich colours.

4. If you were not satisfied, what did you do? Return it? Send it for adjustment or repair? Work with it?
Test the hell out of it and then sold it and never looked back.
Got me a very fine 24-105 L.

5. If you did have it adjusted, how does it work now?
---

6. If you had issues with it at first, do you think it was "user problems" more than the lens itself?
IMO it was the lens and not user problems.

I hope this will clear up some of the threads that have been around lately about this lens.

Voila and good luck to all.
