My first post in this section of the forum and it is not much more than a couple of shots from my garden. All taken with a 300mm f2.8 and 2xTC on a monopod with a 1DMKII N in AV mode at f5.6,converted from RAW and then cropped, border added and resized before using a little USM.

Welcome to the bird forum Gadget Guy and I'm pleased you have posted here for you have a magnificent shot of the sparrow. A lowly bird but captured beautifully. Nice clear shot with good detail and natural colour and a good pose of the bird. Nice catch-light in the eye, yep for your first bird shot in this forum I say well done!

Thanks everyone for the warm reception, have been posting in the motorsport section for some time but fancied a change. Will start trying to get some better captures of more birds over the next few months and look forward to your C&C on the images, I am a bit rusty on some of the species other than the common ones so i might need a bit of help from time to time.

The 300mm 2.8 and 2xTC was sharper than i expected but i did not know how close you have to be to get near a full frame with a bird so other than getting a 500mm lens or bigger do you have any tips you can share. Do most of you use hides or would it be better to save and invest in some more glass?
