Full Frame Lenses

I have a 20D now but want to get a FF (probably 5D) some day. When buying lenses I want to make sure I buy ones that will work well on FF. I only have one Canon lens, which is an L, so assume that is fine. And the others are Tamron and on Sigma. I stayed away from the DII series, so I assume I should be OK there as well??

All Canon EF lenses will work on full frame (ie only ones that won't are EF-S).

The tamron di-II do not work on full frame, nor do Sigma DC.

So you look fine!

here are the labels for cropped sensor, so avoid.
Canon: EF-S
Tamron: Di II (I is ff)
Sigma: DC (DG is ok)
Tokina: DX as in ATX Pro DX (D is ok)

What was said above, but also remember that FF will show faults in many lenses so be careful to read reviews.. Cheap glass that might have cut it on a crop, will definately show its problems in FF especially the 5d with it ginormous resolution:)

Funny, all this talk about sharpness, how did people live wth the soft corners when shooting 35mm film?

As you have a 20D I would not wory about buying lenses for the cropped sensor as they will always work on it in the future. Even if you don't want to keep the 20D as a backup you could still sell the lenses at very little loss, look at it as cheap rent.

I too plan to get a 5D or its succesor within a year, give or take, and don't plan on getting rid of my 2 EF-S lenses as they will still be used into the future. I might think of selling the 10-22 if I end up will a 16-35 for the 5D.

Everyone will have their own views, my thoughts are to buy for the present and deal with the future as it comes.

Or, better yet 40x60 inches (approximately equivalent to viewing a 5D image at 100% on a computer monitor). ;)

Stop down their lenses if they needed to have the corners sharp maybe?
That would also cure light falloff that was recently found out to be a problem :wink:, as the 5D became available to people who before only had crop cameras (and obviously also did not do much very serious film shooting before).

Examining slides with a high mag loupe over a lightbox is the film equivalent of pixel peeping...


If in doubt, I shut up...
