Beautiful shots. The second is really lovely.

Can you explain why the small aperture/longer exposure in these? The first is relatively fast at 1/10 and f.8. I've been trying to learn as much as possible about lighting and try to pay attention to the exif on pics I really like. I want to know not only what works, but why. Thanks!

Got it: Rebel XT, 18-55 kit lens, Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Want it: 50 f1.4, Tokina 12-24, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, 430EX, Opteka BG

Hi Katiesmom,

The first shot, I would have preferred a smaller aperture (f16-f22), but I needed to capture the gentleman with his dog, the light was low, so I upped the ISO to 400 and managed 1/10 sec @ f8, still, if you look closely the dog is slightly blurred.

So, it was a compromise between DOF and sharp subject.

Generallly I use small aperure (generally f22) to make sure everythinng is in focus. and as most of my shots are with a tripod, shutter speed is generally not an issue.

The shot with the web, I tried to keep the subject in focus, and leave the BG blurred, hence the aperture selected.

Hope this helps ?

they are wonderful shots - I really like the first one, the light around the man walking his dog is beautiful.

These are truly amazing shots Les with #2 being my favorite. Great looking suroundings with what looks like excellent light.
I like the low level angle of the first shot with the mid to BG fading into the mist, it kept me staring for a long time. Nice job.

Have to go with #4 as my favorite but #2 was close. The light and saturation is excellent in all of them.

I just KNEW Dimitri would go for number four! :D It's his kind of shot and probably my favourite too .............. although number one is the 'competition winner' if you know what I mean! ;) I also love the spider web ......... but then I am a sucker for a good macro shot! :)
