I am more than likely going to purchase a 70-200 f/2.8 IS very soon and I am wondering about the range of it. What I woud like to know is this: How far away is the 200mm usable? In other words, how far away could I get a head shot, upper body shot, or focus on an animal in the wild? I am just trying to get an idea of the usable range of this lens and I am having a difficult time figuring it out from the pictures people have posted. They may say, taken at 200mm, but they do not say the distance from the object. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

how far on a 1.6 crop? full body shot from 70-110 feet away, headshot from 20-30. small animals will have to be quite close though, so if your main thing is animals, get the 100-400 instead. a lot of people use the 1.3 crop of a markII(n), so they are about 2/3rds the distance. hope that is helpful

Thank you very much, that really helps me understand what I will be able to do with this lens. Thanks again.

320mm vs 640mm. ;)

Basically, it's a great lens for a multitude of things.... however, if you are considering wildlife pushing 40' or more, then you'll probably want to go for a 100-400mm.

The main thing is the 70-200 is the logical choice for your current equipment. I shoot wildlife also, but I actually use my 70-200 more for it because it's in controlled environments. I do get better results from my 100-400L though. (results in reach, not quality)
