Lighting on 3 month old infant -- C&C please

I'd like your feedback please on the lighting used in these two shots. Is the lighting in the first too harsh? My usual images are like the second. Thanks for any input!

I think the first one is just a little harsh on the baby. It is tuff to photograph babies with parents since most adults skin in darker. I adjust the light to the babies skin then adjust in PS if parents skin is too dark. :D

cute baby! i think the 2nd pic works much better with the natural light. what was your FEC setting on your first pic? i find that the omni bounce does not give enough diffusion sometimes. and depending on how you bounced it off the ceiling, you get some shadows cast under certain features like the nose and chin. Look into the lumiquest softbox and you can get a more direct flash that is diffused quite well.
