This is one of those rare birds that is actually prettier and more colourful in its winter plumage. I'm used to seeing them pass by during the spring migration when they are basically all black, but this striking individual here clearly shows the reason it is named the way it is.
The first shot is a slight crop from 400mm and shows more of the habitat it was found in. The second is full frame @360mm. I was surprised at how skittish it was and I was very glad it did not spot me from behind some bushes.
