With that budget you need to look at Sigma and Tamron lenses,
But the 50mm lens you want is the 50/1.8
the Canon lens that might work for you is the 55-200. It is a decent lens companion to the 18-55 kit lens if can afford nothing better and want Canon.

BTW: this thread should be in the lens section.

Re think your budget. I went the route you are going and bought middle of the road lenes thinking about the cost and what is the differance anyway just to sell the middle of the road glass to buy what I should have bought in the first place and saved my self alot of agrvation. I bought the cheap sigma 70-300 non DG APO and it was a mistake. I then upgraded to the Canon 70-200 f4 with a 1.4 TC and what a differance I love this lens. I also bought the Sigma 18-125 which was ok but then cashed it in for the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 which is great in my oponion. My point is that I should have just buyt the desent glass in the first place and save time and agravation. The trouble is that your never going to find cheap and good with the exception of the thrifty 50mm 1.8 that canon offers for like 40 euros.

I would recomend the Canon 70-200 f4 it is the best lens I have in my bag and the cheapest L you can get it is like 600 US I don't know what it is in Euros. It's the best bang for the buck for sure

I thought 200 would be a good price for a decent lens, turns out it's not :( I might have a look at importing one from America, the Canon 70-200 f4 that someone suggested earlier if its $600 it'll cost me £315 - By the time tax and shipping goes on top, i'm probably looking at around the £400 mark, which ain't bad at all ;)

I'll check it out and let you guy's know.

If what I'm doing is wrong, please let us know.

Take a long look at the 135/2.8 -- it gives you the equivlent of 214mm on the 1.6 crop, and it's a good, sharp lens with a fast aperture for a remarkably low price. I moved up to the 70-200, but it was because of changing needs (shooting sports, mostly) that I made that move.
