400D XTI - Standard lens seems to make hissy sound when turning

Hi,

sorry if this tyoe of thread has been posted before

i wanted to find out........

I just bought the new 400D (XIT REBEL)

it all seems ok but the actual standard lens it comes with seems to be a bit
odd.

when i turn the zoom, it makes a weird sound ever so slightly,

if u put it up to your ear you'll hear it clearly - as you turn it...

it reminds me of when u have a few grains of sand in something and u twist it...

it also seems to firm / tight when turning

not smooth.

i wanna know if anyome else gets this?

i know the kit lenses are basic, but should i expect this?

i have the option to return it within 45 days but i still think its a good camera

Perhaps you can take it to a camera store and try out another lens there and see if it makes the same noise.

Is auto focus on and you are moving it manually ?

I experienced exactly the same with my kit lens on my new 400D, feels and sounds like a 'grinding' sensation in the mechanism.

I didn't really worry about it much to be honest, and after being out taking about 100 shots of varying focal lengths it seems to have eased a lot

I'll ditto that, mine's the same way. I've had my xti about a week now.

Well, it is a cheap lens-- $90 is nothing when compared to what you can pay.

I think that's normal. Keep your ears off the lens and just take pictures instead.

Yeah, to back up my previous post with content-- my non-USM lenses hiss and whirr and what have you when focusing (I dunno about zooming, they're primes).

The kit lens 18-55 that I got with my 20D makes exactly the same noise, like there is a bit of paper caught inside of it.

It makes no difference at all. I still get the near-L like picture quality that a well-used kit lens brings. Seriously.

yea mine did when i first tried it it did this but now it doesnt seem to

Make sure to turn it to MF before turning it. Not sure if it will harm it by turning the focuser while in AF but if its there to be used then use it!

i really need to re-enforce that im not talking about the focus rim or the manual /auto button.

im talking about when you actually zoom in using your hand
on the lens (this has nothing to do with the manual/auto focus)

its just the zoom im talking about.

anyway - i took it back to store today, we tested 4 different ientical lens's

(18-55 standard)
and they all did the same noise

but he replaced me with the one that has the least noise

.
anyways, its a shame it makes that craps slight sandy grinding sound but thats the way it is i guess.

the body is more important in the long run as i'll be a getter a better lense in 2007
