My daughter is going through a "no pictures please" phase. While trying to take a candid picture of her, she caught me out.

Same here. Although, she sometimes does a 180 and is a photo ham! But usually that picture is what I get.

Get a 200mm and shoot from away and it may help!

Thanks for the feedback. It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one having this problem! :)

My nephew was the same for a while until I got him involved in the photography, let him play with my camera, take a few shots etc, then got him to sit in for me while I set up my lights etc, now he's quite comfortable in front of the camera.

I've been taking shots of my kids since Day 1. Emma is so used to having a camera clicking away that she barely notices it. But that's a great shot. The DOF makes her arm look a mile long!

(Please don't tell her I said that!)

If a friend or relative of mine didn't want me to take her picture, I'd probably respect her request and refrain from taking her picture. I don't think I'd try sneaking candid shots of her.

If the individual were a young child, I might let her hold my camera and take a few shots of me. Could be that would change her mind about not wanting her picture taken.

But ultimately, while I don't accord precisely the same rights to children as I do to adults, I tend to figure that if the child's old enough to grasp the concept of having her picture taken, she's old enough to have an opinion as to whether she wants her picture taken. And save for situations where it's important she be photographed (passport, school I.D., etc.), I'll honor her wishes. (This doesn't mean I'll refrain from photographing an infant who gets cranky when I point my camera at her. Nor that I'll necessarily refrain from photographing an amusement park without first asking every one of the hundreds of children present whether they mind.)

Yeah, 30 years from now she may wish you'd taken her picture anyway. But then again, she may not. So you can't rationalize ignoring her expressed desires on the grounds that "when she's older, she'll be glad I ignored her wishes."

I hope that when I'm 103 years old and drooling in my wheelchair, my great-grand niece will honor my request not to be photographed.

Anyway, that's just how I see it.
