I would like to purchase a filter system with a few ND grads and warming filters to start. I've done my research here and have read differeing info, so could use some help.

I will be using the set with a 30D, and will be using wideangle lenses - the widest is the 10-22.

Lee is out because of the expense, so it's a choice between cokin and hitech.

I have read that the hitech filters are good, but have a more limited selection of filters. On the other hand, I have read the cokin colored filters are good, but to stay away from the cokin ndgrads.

I already have some good (B&W) screw on ND filters, so what I'm focusing on with the filter system is ND grads, colored gels, and special effects like crossscreen.

any help would be appreciated. /Dan

I don't use Cokin ND's any more due to the colour casts they caused. I started using HiTech and am very happy. If you go for the 100mm holder you can always buy the odd Lee filter later?

What Neilyb said... Go with HiTech.

really dont think you need warming filters with editing tools in PS or elements. Friend uses cokin with good results. I am a believer in only using CP and ND filters. I think most all other effects can be done in the "darkroom". I hate to say it, but you really get what you pay for with glass. glass being an objective or filter.

Will the 100mm work with the ultrawide lenses?

Also, I'm wondering if anybody ever sees the need to stack 3 or more filters in front of the lens. I think 2 pieces would be my limit.

I would have to go with Dante on the tint/color gels - you can do that with Photoshop quite easily. A polarizer is best circular and affixed to the lens and since you have the NDs already, you're set there. ND Grads are where it's at on those filter holders. The cross filters are cool too (though you can get a similar effect stopping down a lot on those night shots).

As for stacking filters - the less, the better! You CAN stack three, but you lose light and IQ with each additional filter. I'd keep it at 1-2, max.

Thanks, all. Appreciate the help. I think I'll go with the ND grads. Unfortunately, I have a problem with the circular polarizer I already own. It is one of those designed for wideangle lenses that does not have a front adapter ring, so I can't stack the filter holder on top of the CP. I'll either have to buy a new screw-on CP or one for the holder. /Dan

Hi all,
i am looking at venturing into filters . The question is do i set the white balance as normal?? i am using a gray card to set my white balance so if i were to used filters..do i set the white balance with or without the filters?
Does this also apply when i am using a polarizer?
Thanks
