As amonline says, depends on whether you want to shoot wide angle or 28-200mm in the dark :-)

Get the 17-40L. Unless you take alot of indoor shots, your flash will probably see much more limited use. I never use mine.

I own one, and it's great. Here's a link to a sunset picture taken by the lens and a 20D...

I'd say get the lens and practice outdoors... this will provide the best glowing feeling about the purchase... then, in a week or so, order your flash and begin 'learning' indoors. ;)

a flash doesn't necessarily need to be confined to indoor situations

its a lifesaver IMO when you're outside in midday and you want to properly light your subject without blowing out the entire background

theres many useful applications to flash other than lighting things up in the dark (or in low light situations)... you just have to read up on what it can offer

i noticed that you're pretty limited with your WA because of the 20D. I'd get the 17-40s first, but think about a flash sometime soon

The 17-40 is fine indoors, as long as you aren't some kind of crack fiend you should be able to hand-hold down to 1/40 or so with the wide end of the lens. This gives you a fair bit of freedom indoors. I have a flash and a 17-40 and use the lens more. But I guess it all depends on your purposes. Note, though, that the pop flash will not work with the 17-40 attached.

You have the (cr*ppy) built-in flash on the 20D if you really need it for short reach stuff/fill-in etc. so I'd go with the 17-40L personally, i don't have one myself but for the money it's a very good lens I believe.
