fritz1,
Thanks, glad you liked it :D
I try to keep a balance between the sky and land with luck :) as I don't use ND filters and shoot in M. The 5D is easier because of the better dynamic range :) with the help of the 17-40L which is a great lens :)

Go for the lens first. If in the future you see that you need flash just buy it.

I notice your gear list looks exactly the same as what I'm hoping to get (I'm currently borrowing a lense for my 20D). Do you notice a gap between 40 and 70 day to day? I'm hoping that the 17-40 will work as a walk around and I can use the 70-200 for a little extra reach when I need it.

I do a mixture of both, but more outdoor, natural light.....

There's your answer. Get the 17-40mm. A flash won't help if you don't have the lens to take the picture with. :)

Get a used 420/550EX on eBay.

I have the 17-40 for only weeks so I cannot say many things about the range.I believe it is just fine.I can always move a little or put the 50 1.8.

17-40L is a superb lens.
I missed it when I sold my 350D with it so I bought another one a few months ago eventhough I dont have a body to go with it right now.

Flash. It'll breathe new life and functionality into even your mediocre tamron.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)
