Someone I know is offering me a Canon 75-300mm IS f4-5.6 with Lens hood, UV filter and of course all the caps, in the original box for 300 dollars. He's telling me this is a good all around lens till i wanted to move up to an L series. I trust him that the lens is in like new shape.

Your thoughts?

Not a bad deal as long as the lens is good condition

Excellent deal if it's in good condition! $500+ on eBay...

Seems like its a good price from what I can tell. Do you all agree that its a decent all around lens? I was thinking about having that lense, my kit lens and a 50mm f1.8 on my week trip to england. Maybe the kit lens wont even be necessary..

Do some searches. As I recall, the 75-300 IS has the same optics as the regular 75-300, not the greatest of lenses. $300 is probably a fair price, but not a steal. For the other poster quoting $500 on ebay, probably confusing with the new 70-300 IS, which is an excellant lens.

I've found the same, its apparently a 'cheapie' on optics but the IS makes it OK

If funds allow, I'd try for the new 70-300, but if that's all you can swing, it will serve your purpose until you can afford to upgrade.

You don't want it any longer? Have your friend put it on the "Sell" forum.

i had this lens when i started out. its only big fault is that it is terribly slow to focus. its still fairly sharp enough, and a good lens for a begginer. the IS is a handy feature. i sold mine for about $300 so that sounds like an appropriate deal. its not the greatest canon consumer glass, but its not the worst either.
