I'd go with the 100-400 as well, but I just have an observation, and this may not apply to your situation, but I'd like to make it for the benefit of others reading this thread:

It's never a good idea to buy new gear right before you have to take it into the field and use it. If at all possible, you should purchase it far enough in advance that you can practice with it ahead of time so that you can learn how best to use it. All photography gear has some degree of inherent quirks or compromises, and if you go out with a brand new piece of gear to capture once in a lifetime shots, you may be sorely disappointed.

Of course, circumstances vary, and it's certainly better to go with a piece of needed, but new gear than with no gear at all, so please take my comment with a grain of salt. It's just I see so many of these "Urgent" threads that I felt it was worth making a point if I could.

No question, I'd go for the 100-400 iS and if money was tight, than go for the Sigma AF 80-400 EX DC - OS for $999- which is just as sharp and also stabilized optically...

EOS 40D sold, EF 300 f/4L iS Sold

Personally, I just never cared for push-pull zooms.

I love my 100-400L I must have a great copy, it is plenty sharp. Here's an image shot with the 100-400 @ 400mm, WITH CANONS 1.4TC. I did very little sharpening, no more than normal for a 1D.

(30D (1.6) + 400mm = ) 640mm X 1.4TC = 896mm ;)

I went with the 300mm IS f4L and the 1.4TC and never looked back. I get really good results and I think its better then the 100-400 IS L. That is just me though. The TC is great if you buy the Canon L version.

Congrats... I would hope a prime would be better than the TP. ;)

FWIW, it's a DG lens and not a DC, so it's compatible for FF or APS-C.
