Simple step RAW, made complex

My recent pictures included mostly JPEG files, but I added a few RAW files using a new 30D. I just installed PhotoShop Elements 4.0, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to download the RAW images to the Editor.

Not only that, but the typical "Help" menu is no help at all. Here' what I get when I type in the complex topic of "RAW" in the index:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

Wow! That's helpful. I was hoping that there would be about 30 topics and I could find the one that actually described the process.

Anyway, do I need a plug-in or something to open a RAW image in PS Elements 4? If not, how do I get there in 5 minutes or less???????

Try downloading the ACR update from here so that your PSE4 can recognize the 30D raw files:

OK, I followed the instructions to do that, including removing the existing Camera Raw file from the plug-ins list and replacing it with the downloaded plug in. When I open PSE4, the organizer page doesn't show any of the RAW images, and I can't find an option in the various menus to open them from the file.

Unfortunately, I don't have PSE4 so I can't help you but hopefully, someone who has and knows PSE4 can.

I have the same problem with 20d RAW files. It still says the device contains no supported media, but then you can see the RAW file sine in the organiser. Odd.

Then how do you get them into PS4? I presume that the workaround is to open them with the Canon software then import them into PSE. Seems like an extra step that could easily be avoided...

Get a card reader. They're inexpensive, fast, and so much easier.

I'm using a card reader. There's no problem downloading them into a file on the computer, and there's no problem viewing the JPEG images in PSE or the JPEG and CR2 Raw images with the Canon utility. The problem is opening the RAW images directly into PhotoShop Elements, which I can't seem to do.

I am using PSE 4. Once I downloaded the latest update and placed it in the folder, all I had to do was go into Elements, select Open, and select the file. The file opens into the Adobe raw editor at that point. I am using a 30D.

I am still using DPP though. I like the ability to see the raw files in PSE, but I prefer DPP for conversion.
