I'm looking for a good all purpose lens that also takes good quality sports photos. I found the Tamron 28-300 mm F/3.5-6.3 XR DI LD ASP AF Lens F/Canon EOS but I cannot find any user reviews of it. Is it just so new that no one has used it yet, or does it suck that badly? If anyone has used this lens, could you please give me a rundown on the pros and cons and if its worth the $399 price tag?

One of my friends has it, it is pritty nice between 50-200mm but kinda turns to mush on the low end and far end...

If it's for outdoor sports, I'd say add an extra 100.00 bucks and get a used canon 70-200 L f/4. You could get some nice shots from that. I'm not sure about this tamron.

i had it, it has since been returned. it is an okay lens. not really the sharpest, but i got some really acceptable pictures out of it. it does get a little crappy toward the long end. i guess the nice thing about it is how compact it is for its range.

A friend of mine has one that he is selling here due to some recent upgrades. I am sure if you send him a message he would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Here is a link to his for sale post with some sample shots: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=217618

Hope it helps,
Travis

I have one that has lived on my 10D since it was new. Bought it right after they were released. It is a good, lightweight all purpose lens. Unless you pixel peep, you shouldn't be disappointed. For sports shooting in plenty of light it might do. Lens extends quite aways at full zoom.

Can't speak for the 70-200 f/4 vs. minimum aperature of the tamron at 200mm, but would expect the 70-200 is faster.

Also take a look HERE
Most likely it will not give better images than your 70-300/4.0-5.6 Canon lens.

Best regards,
Andy

Not sure the 70-300 was Canons, but the Canon 70-300 IS, is quite good.

Oops, right, it says 'for Canon'.

So if it is one of the more reputable brands, e.g. Sigma, Tamron or Tokina, chances are that the lens will be as least as good as the 28-300, as it is easier to design a lens with a shorter zoom factor that performs well on both ends of the zoom range than with a so-called 'hyperzoom' (+10x zoom range).

Best regards,
Andy

it is a great all round starter lens or lazy man's dust fearing lens. Here are some pics from when I owned it. plus tamron gives you a 6 year warranty and hood. wish they made one that was f2.8

Pros- the lightest in its class. 6 year warranty. Included Hood. INCREDIBLE RANGE! Price is low.

Cons- Not the fastest AV. Sharpness falls off at mm extremes.
