Hi

Just picked up a 30D as a back up/additional body to my 5D.

Interested to here/see from anyone that's used the 30D (or other 1.6X crop body) with 300 f2.8 and 1.4X tele. My maths makes it a 672mm equivalent F4 lens - yikes that's quite big!!

Hi Mark,

Yep I used a 350D with my 300 2.8 plus a TC earlier in the year for some Cricket. I found that extra bit of reach handy compared to the 1.3 crop of my 1D.

A vaguelly related question, is the EOS-1D Mark II N full frame, i note you say the 1D 1.3 crop.

no, only the 1Ds, 1DsMKII, and 5D are full frame. the 1D series has a 1.3x crop.
I have a 20D and 300 2.8, but dont own a 1.4x yet, everything ive heard suggests it still performs amazingly good, even great with the 2X. In the words of Ferris Bueller "if you have the means, id highly suggest you pick one up"

Interesting, thanks, so lots of 'pro' shots we see may effectively be taken with a 390mm or 520mm, as opposed to 300mm or 400mm.

for general principle (and how confusing it would make things with the different crops). photographers do NOT add the crop factor of the sensor when referring to the lens, or what mm the shot was taken at. the image may show the reach of a 390mm lens, but it still has the same perspective of a 300mm lens, just cropped to the center.

But it's very relevant when considering shooting position, lens choice, 'reach', cropping, etc, isn't it?

1.6 crop+300+1.4 tc = headshots from 90 feet... use with caution ;)

Yes, I appreciate that. The goal at the far end of a footy pitch is a good 300ft away! Was just interested if anyone had used them together.

A friend of mine uses a 600 + 1.4, with a 400 + 1.4 on his second camera. both bodies are mk IIs. So yes... it is done all the time. Many of Gavins shots are done with a 1.4 tc attached. Feel free to use it.

I use the bigma 50-500 f4 on my 30d all the time for equine events and it rocks. as long as the shutter speed is over 800 it freezes all movment ,I do go to 600 at times but try not to as all my shots are hand held. have a look at my site and see the Somerton show they were all hand held with a lot at 500mm

How do you rate it for sharpness?

Fantastic, much better than my tameron, I find that f8-f11 the best and 200 to 450mm if you use a tripod then its outstanding. if you go to my website go to somerton minimus pairs and look at the distance shots along the hedge line and a small jump those were at 500mm hand held, the distance was a good 200 mtrs or more.

if you put it on a 400d and crop back to what a 1.6 20d /30d gives in MP's you gain more reach aprox 50mm extra on a 300mm lens so would be even more with a tc added.
i think my math,s are right .
