USM on my ex 28-135mm IS was poor at best while on my Sigma 100-300mm EX HSM it was amazing. Anyone who tells you there is a blanket difference is peddling an agenda or inexperienced with different brands because the truth is it depends on the lens. https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1203740

Well I just got my 70-220 2.8 Sigma HSM,and I honestly cant tell any difference from my Canons with USM.I tried a fellow students 70-200 Canon and it really didnt seem much different.

You have to look at each lens on it's own merit, they all differ slightly. Too many variables affect how long it takes a lens to focus. It's not just a matter of USM Vs HSM, it's also a matter of focus algorithms, focal length, speed of light entry and also light scatter/contrasts control. Cheers Wayne

Tamron and Tokina's AF speeds are a touch slower. AF speeds vary by the model, not just the type of AF motor it has, and the body makes some difference as well. Gallery: http://tomyi.smugmug.com/
