Hey guys,
I gotta say sorry for eventually using the wrong category, but as you see on the number of posts I've done, I'm new to this ;)
I've been using a canon SLR (non-digital) for quite some time now and love it more and more every day I shoot. I transformed my basement into a studio and I'm happy w/ the result. So now I'm thinking about switching to a DSLR.

My question: I do have a bunch of lenses including wide angle, zoom and such. However, these are all manual focus lenses (One's a "canon" lens, two "tokina" ones and two "sigma"). Is there ANY way, of getting these to work w/ my future DSLR? I'd appreciate your help, I'm feelin desperate!

Thanks :)
Matt

The EOS Lens FAQ at the top of the forum has a link to this thread on lens adapters. In general, the FD mounts aren't adaptable, except via a machine shop, to the AF cameras. Sorry.

Matt,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you will learn a lot here, and have some fun along the way.

As a general statement, for the types of lenses you describe, you would spend more time and money than they are worth to try and make them work on a DSLR. IMO, The one exception: if you have a really high quality lens and you want to use it for macro work, there is an inexpensive way. But you sacrifice the ability to focus to infinity, and, of course you have to live with manual focus and limited auto-exposure capability.

Long focal lengths are another situation. You can save some real money in the 300mm and longer range using Canon FD lenses on a DSLR.

Have Fun,

Rick

As the others say -don't bother.Trying to adapt FD lenses to EOS is just plain hard work, super expensive (or both)

Just sell the FD lenses on Ebay where you'll get a good price for them, then buy other manual lenses that CAN be easily adapted to EOS.These include Nikon,Leica,Zeiss,Olympus and others :)

It can be done, and I've tried - but it's just not worth it.

Okay, I appreciate all your guys' answers and came to the decision not to bother dealing w/ all this ;) So I'll prolly get myself the eos400d. Is that a good one for starting up? I mean, I'm not a professional; and for the beginning I thought about jsut getting a Kit, including the body and a single lens. Would that be a good decision?

Excellent decision, in fact, stop what you are doing and order it RIGHT now!

Or, order a 20D for 200 more, or order a 30D for 300 more, or order a 350D for 200 less, and get a nice lens to go with ;)

IMHO, the best startup combo to buy is the 400D/XTi with the EF-S 17-85 IS lens. It will perform well for you and give you a pretty good range. If you are budget-constrained, go for the EF-S 18-55 lens instead.

Have Fun,

Rick
