You sure can. I have gotten some nice portrait photos from my 100 mm f/2.8 macro. Here is one of my son that I took the day after I got the macro lens. Click the photo for a larger view.

Tareq "I am very lazy, a normal consumer" More info | Macro lens is like any other lens, i can take portrait with wide lens as well, but each lens dedicated for some specialized purposes, Macro lens is great for landscape and portrait, but greatest for macro, wide lenses are great for some close up or portrait as well, but greatest for wide landscape shots, got point.
