Suppose I wanted to have a body from another manuf - not Canon and I wanted to use my Sigma lenses on both. Can I get and change (back 'n forth) another lens mount from Sigma? I'm not sure. No, I'm not going over to Nikon - just noticing the new Sigma 14mp, 1.7x body. Ok, only 5 AF points and only 3 fps...... But, I still wonder if it is possible to change mounts.

You can use adapter rings, but I believe most rings will not let the camera control the lens (auto focus, aperture selection, etc), correct me if I am wrong.

No, I did not want to use an adapter. I want to change the mouont on the lens so I get all the functions.

Sigma lenses are manufacturered with a specific mount and mechanics/electronics etc. for a particular make of camera (Canon, Nikon and Sigma's own range for instance)

I think you are asking can you buy a Sigma lens and change the mount to use it on any make of Camera? - No.

Darn, not what I wanted to hear. Yes, I wanted to change a Sigma lens I already own to work on another camera. So it isn't just mechanical (the mount?)

That's right it's not just mechanical.

Oddly enough.... the computer language sigma use between their cameras and lenses is VERY closely related to that used by canon EOS (they very likely ripped it off judging by the way they copied pentax' K mount (the basic mechanical shape ,with minor changes to get past the patent)

I have seen on the web where some techy russian guy converted canon EOS lenses so that they would fit on a sigma body ....and they actually worked !(well .....mostly,some aspects caused minor issues)
That said it's not something i'd recommend! Changing mechanical parts is one thing ,dealing with electronic interface languages is is another. I want to try this myself one day but i'll do it in a simple way-
The way i wanted to do it was to buy a sigma SA mount lens then convert it mechanically so that it would fit an EOS camera .If the electrical worked i would have been happy. If they don't i'd simply convert it back and forget it.There's no way i could be bothered learning about the communication codes
One hting i'm interested to discover - If sigma lenses do indeed work on canon cameras,i wonder if they work on the latest models? Remember how it is that many older (EOS mount) sigma lenses refuse to work on the latest bodies? So would sigma use the latest firmware in their brand lenses..?

The Sigma/EOS 'compatability' (if that's the right word :D) is the only such case in the camera world.Other brand lenses and cameras can sometimes be interchanged but it's allways purely mechanical.

Very intresting Ron and Jaetie, thanks! Have so much $ invested in Canon EF lenses, wondered what I'd do if a body came along (non-Canon) that I'd like to have - without buying more lenses for it.
