I don't have a TC so I don't know what the conversion would be. the 100-400 is a little slow in the dark but not in the sun. And it's fine in moderate light. I LOVE it. But it's not speedy ;) (but neither is the 5D, which is what I use it with). I shot whales from a great distance on a very cloudy/overcast day and had no prob. catching the shots.

Thanks permagrin..

Right now my list of lens to buy are:
70-200L 2.8 IS
100-400L
and a 24-70 2.8L to replace my 17-85

**sighs and fills out another job application**

i bought some cheaper lenses thinking id be happy with them... then i shot with my friends big white lens (70-200 non is and 300mm f4) and WOW, it made me go out and buy my sigma 70-200mm(best price/performance)and it is actually sharper than my friends canon model.

It's a great lens to be sure, but one thing to consider is that your 300D isn't going to be very good beyond ISO 400. You might do well to look into the 70-200mm f4 L IS when it hits the shelf (price dependent of course) and look into a used 20D or 30D. You could get a few hundred bucks for the 300D to help with the difference.

If you get something with better ISO performance, it will be like adding 1 or 2 stops to ALL of your lenses, rather than just the one. Just something to keep in mind. I love my 300D, but once in a while, even at f1.8 on my Nifty Fifty, I wish I was able to crank up the ISO a bit without so much IQ loss due to noise.

Go for it. Great lens.

It will actually turn out to be good value because you will keep this lens for a very long time. Way longer than you will keep your digital body.

or a sigma 70-200 f2.8 = 6ish used or 800new

20d body = 1000 + sigma 70-200 = 1800 just a bit more than the IS

or 30d used for about the same price

Hold off untill you can get the 70-200 2.8L IS. You won't regret it. I had the non IS version (f2.8) for about 8 years and just this month got the IS version.

Got mine yesterday and went out with it today. I love this lens. It is every bit as good as I have been reading. Best lens I own hands down. Not only is the IS great but I am sure the quality is a step over the f/4 that I have been using. I can't say enough about this one.
