I always thought these birds caught the fish between their beak--when I zoomed in on this picture at home, I saw that he had actually speared it! He carried it behind some weeds so I couldn't watch but I assume he pushed it off with his foot and then ate it. This was really far away with my 200 and 1.4 extender. Can't wait until I get a longer lens!

nice one, its certainly a lot more efficient than catching a fish in their beak

I took a shot when he dove his head in the water but it is a blur of water and heron..lol. It's incredibly fast--reminds me of a snake striking.
