For protection, many people suggest using a hood rather than a filter, tho a hood that doesn't vignette on this lense isn't going to offer too much protection, either from falls or stray light.

I'm also a reformed user of UV filters (maybe we need to start a 12-step program:)).

I still fall off the wagon if I'm shooting on a beach or during inclement weather as I'm afraid of nasties penetrating around or sandblasting the front element, however, most of the time, just use the hood or (perish the thought) have a naked lens. Really got tired of good shots being ruined by flare, which has improved by removing the extra layer of glass.

As others have said, this argument will go on forever with no resolution. Its just a personal preference.

One sugggestion if you do get one is to get the standard; thin is not necessary, and you'll find those front threads very handy for keeping a lens cap on. The rubber push-on things are just absolute cr*p.

Good luck

I love the 12 step comment. But if it's sunny and nice without haze from the clouds I may tend to use circ polarizer sometimes...
but unless i am in the middle of the dessert with 40mph wind gusts I highly doubt i am ever dropping a UV filter on my lenses again...
